at sandy hook elementary school. six adults including 29-year-old rachel davino who dressed up in costume and broke out in song to help her students learn. and ann marie murphy whose parents say shield some of her students from the hail of bullets. full-time substitute teacher lauren russo dreamed as a little girl of becoming a teacher, even making a set of dolls her first classroom of students. mary was the school psychologist who for years helped children deal with life's terrible challenges. when the first shots were fired, she and school principal dawn hochsprung quickly headed toward the danger. the two women reportedly lunged at the gunman and died trying to overtake him. there was also 27-year-old teacher vickie lee soto who died trying to protect her students. >> their father, carlos, was up the other night identifying vickie's body and was just told kind of how she was found, protecting her kids, doing instinctively what she knew to do, protecting her children. >> the gunman's mother, nancy lanza, was the first victim last friday, shot by her own son in their own home. and the ki

some reports as a child he did. >> he did not attend sandy hook elementary. >> alisyn: very interesting. >> and the mom did not work there. >> alisyn: and there were confusing reports, a teacher, substitute teacher and i read a report she was a teachers aide. there were some reports he had an altercation earlier in the week. >> with the school. >> alisyn: with officials at the school. >> i spoke with lieutenant paul vance with the state police yesterday afternoon and asked him was there a prior altercation a couple of days prior to this incident being carried out and he went on to say, we have no confirmation of that. he denied that it was happening, but apparently they're still investigating all aspects of this, but it was reported previously that perhaps it was an altercation, again, and lieutenant paul vance, new yorking that down. as we learn more about the victims of this tragedy in midtown community is coming together to support each other as well. ♪ emotional vigils continued tonight and today. and president obama will travel to newtown to meet with the victim's families and pe

're slated to begin work on a bill offering additional funding for victims of hurricane sandy that would provide an additional $9.7 billion in borrowing authority for the national flood insurance program which is now capped at $20.7 billion. it would also provide the requested $11.5 billion for the fema disaster relief fund, and it also includes some mitigation measures for future disasters. also we expect later debate today on a couple of judicial nominations. earlier this afternoon south carolina governor nikki haley announced she's selected freshman congressman tim scott to fill the seat being vacated by senate jim demint. senator demint leaving to become the president to have heritage foundation, and we'll take a look at what governor haley had to say now. schultz picks up msnbc's continuing coverage of the sandy hook elementary school shooting right now. >>> good evening, americans, and welcome to "the ed show" from new york. there are tragedies in life that shake our souls and break our hearts. today the nation experienced one of those tragedies. every american will struggle to come to grips with what happened today in a small community in connecticut. sandy hook elementary school in the small community of about 27,000 residents was the site of a shooting rampage. at this hour we know 26 people at the school were shot and killed by a lone gunman. 20 of those deceased were children. surviving students and their parents said teachers ordered children to hide in closets. witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots, as many as 100 rounds. police found the shooter dead. officers never fired a shot. the gunman's mother was found dead at a newtown location where the gunman lived. police have released no motive for the attack. the weapons used in the shooting were all legally purchased and were registered to the gunman's mother. an emotional

sandy hook elementary school. the teacher who for all intents and purposes risked her life in an attempt to save the lives of her children there. and i do want to call our viewer's attention to the left side of the screen here, president obama who is at andrews air force base, the president expected to hop on a plane to take air force one over to newtown, connecticut to take part in a vigil tonight. he'll be meeting with first responders, he'll also be meeting with family members of some of the survivors there. as you can see president obama making his way to air force one. kristen well welker who's standing by to travel with the president. what can we expect to hear from president obama tonight? >> reporter: as you mentioned, president obama is going to start off by meeting with the folks who were most affected by this tragedy as he arrives in newtown, connecticut. he'll be speaking with family members and first responders here at newtown high school. he said his comment also focus on the victims, on the lives lost. this is becoming an all too familiar path for this president. this will

walked into two different classrooms at sandy hook elementary. he fired dozens of rounds. he killed 26 people. 18 children pronounced dead at the scene. six adults pronounced dead at the scene. and then two children who survived their initial wounds and were hospitalized later died in hospital. the shooter then killed himself at the school. the associated press is citing a law enforcement official moments ago saying authorities found more than the previously described two guns at the school once they responded. more firearms than the two we have previously heard about. they're not giving any further details yet. but that report just in from the associated press. the students who were not shot, none of them older than fourth graders, were escorted out of the building by police officers this morning. they were taken to a fire station next door. police officers reportedly told some of the children to keep their eyes closed until they had reached the parking lot. law enforcement officials later discover that another person, an adult woman, possibly the shooter's mother was also shot and ki

for the people of newtown and sandy hook, but last evening the president said it best. they inspire all of us through what they have done and the way their first responders and teachers and families and community have come together. let us hope that that inspiration leads to the same kind of resolve that the president had last evening. it's time for us to act. there's ample legislation that's out there that's in the hopper. it needs to be focused not only on gun control, but on mental health and youth violence as well, but not to act is to be complicit because we know this will happen again, and the slaughter of this innocence that took place has got to tug at the heart strings of every single parent in this country, and so it becomes all of our responsibility but certainly in the united states congress to take action and already there's an outpouring for members in my caucus, and i hope that we can reach bipartisan accord on this because there's many in the nra that certainly believe in universal background checks and as was pointed out by dianne feinstein and others, assault weapons, what p

for one more suspect, a 17-year-old with a teardrop tattoo under his left eye. it appears superstorm sandy took a bite out of metro's already lagging ridership. a report says the storm helped reduce ridership by nearly 10% in october. the transit agency lost nearly 2.5 million trips when it was shut down nearly two days. it lost $13 million in revenue. ridership is already down 5% before sandy hit the d.c. area in late october. excitement is building for sunday's cowboys and redskins game. to there's no denying that. fedex field will be packed and you can expect huge crowds at bars and restaurants and anywhere the game will be on tv. john gonzalez is at fedex field. i've seen pictures in the past on facebook of you. you've been at a lot of games. will you be at this one? >> i will try. it is a late game especially for us. it's the hottest ticket of the year in the d.c. area. the last time the redskins were in the playoffs was in 2006. that's part of the reason why this game was moved to a prime- time hour on national television. this is the big one. i can tell you, fans are really excited.
